Turn in Homework

Turn in homework. You should have read the essay by Joseph Telushkin (262-264) and completed the graphic organizer noting the author's PURPOSE and rhetorical appeals. We will quickly discuss Telushkin's ideas Tuesday.

Investigate: Are You Developing Your Own INFORMED Opinion?

In small groups, examine the website created for this freshman comp class's project on The Sunflower.
Read some of the responses and consider their arguments. Notice the way these writers drew on personal experience as well as the text to develop their own opinions. With your group, outline the CLAIMS/REASONS/EVIDENCE for two of the posted essays. You will share these with the class next time.

This is Your Prompt

  • Having read Wiesenthal's account and related texts, write a two-page argument that takes a position on whether the Nazi soldier deserves forgiveness and that synthesizes information from at least three different sources.
    • Formulate a clear central claim (position).
    • Support claims with logical reasons.
    • Use evidence from multiple sources to support reasons.
      • Use evidence from 2-3 different texts read within unit (The Sunflower, Marcuse's essay, Langer's essay, Bacon's essay titled "On Revenge," Alkalaj's essay (101), Telushkin (262), Worse than War documentary).
    • Develop argument into a full two-page piece.
This will be written in a 40 minute timed write next class period!
